Acid Reflux Cancer - A Remote But Real Possibility
Acid reflux cancer is not really called as such, but there is a link between acid reflux and a particular type of cancer.
First, let's quickly check the type of acid reflux symptoms that we are talking about. The odd bout of indigestion or heartburn is nothing to worry about.
But for those who get heartburn symptoms every day or most days, this condition is known as GERD or acid reflux and could lead to a type of acid reflux cancer.
Acid reflux must be treated and should not be left ignored, even if the sufferer can put up with the pain.
This is because if stomach acid is allowed to reach the esophagus repeatedly over a period of years, the lining of it will change over time. This change is irreversible and is known as Barrett's esophagus (or Barrett's or CELLO). Barrett's is a premalignant condition i.e. it could possibly lead to an acid reflux cancer: esophageal cancer, and is considered to put you at higher risk of developing it.
Additionally, if this type of acid reflux cancer does develop, the prognosis is fairly poor, therefore prevention and early diagnosis of this condition are very important.
Prevention of acid reflux cancer is best done by prescription of PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) for the patient with GERD or acid reflux. These are the most efficient known acid inhibitors and thus by removing the stomach acid, it cannot reach the esophagus.
It is also recommended for acid reflux suffers to have an endoscopic procedure every year or so to check the state of their esophagus.
The highest known rates of esophageal cancer are not from a Western white collar stressed out workforce but from Linxian in China. It is thought that this is due to extreme nutritional deficiencies in their diet. Therefore, it is important for acid reflux sufferers to maintain a balanced diet which is also good for overall health and disease prevention.
